Spring showers bring May flowers. That may be true, but they also bring rainy days just when you and the kids are really ready for crummy winter weather to be over.
Rainy days mean more time in doors and the potential for less active kids. Recently, during a rainy day, I discovered that kids really like yoga. We were mainly just playing, but we turned it into a fun, healthful family activity. Many of the poses are named after things that kids enjoy and admire. Downward-facing Dog. Child’s pose. Mountain pose. Archer. Warrior. Bridge. Half Moon. Crane. Frog. Cobra. Triangle. Camel. Tree. If you practice yoga, try to spend time with your kids doing these fun, healthful moves.
Even if you do not practice yoga and are not familiar with it, you can have fun moving your bodies and making shapes with your bodies. You could play a game where you try to make your body into animal shapes. Sometimes, we play “spell the alphabet.” The kids and I take turns making the letter shapes with our bodies.
Like any exercise, make sure that you do not over stretch or do movements for which your body is not ready. Don’t do anything that feels uncomfortable because it could lead to injury.
