I am lying in bed last night after a long day of work, taking care of the kids, and cleaning up the house when I turn on the television. The kids have just gone to bed and it is my time to relax, do some work on the computer, and decompress.

I am starting to channel surf and go through the mindless surfing that I usually engage in every night, when I come across a special program. It couldn’t have been that important because I can’t recall which channel it was on or what the program was about. At the end of the day, I usually just stare off into my own world, so forgive me for the lack of details for the show. However, I remember there were two children talking about their dad that just passed away. They kept describing how much their father meant to them and the fact that he loved life and he was always smiling.

It hit me that no matter how young your children are, they understand emotions and expressions. I realized then that through all of life’s ups and downs we need to smile more. I have truly been blessed with four wonderful healthy kids and a great wife. I have a lot to smile about and be thankful for. Treat every day and situation separately and smile through it. Repeat after me: SMILE, SMILE, SMILE. It is just a small five letter word, but when life has you down, look around your life and find something to smile about. Your kids will notice and it will brighten their day.
