If you’ve ever been at home on a rainy or scorching hot day wondering how to keep the kiddos from zoning in on the TV for hours, you are not alone—we’ve all been there. From teaching in preschools to babysitting in homes, I’ve had to find ways to keep the creative juices flowing. Here are a few ideas for activities that save the day—any day, include anything that requires more than 12 seconds of thought.

  1. Why crack open a tub of “Playdoh” when you can make your own from ingredients in the kitchen? Making colored play dough or oatmeal play dough is much more of a hands-on activity and a lot more fun for the whole family.

  2. Try this mathematical equation on for size. BAKING SODA + VINEGAR= VOLCANO! There are so many variations to this simple activity, including adding construction paper and mud to the outside of a plastic bottle to give it a real volcano look. Add food coloring for a “lava” look or simply let your kiddos take turns pouring vinegar in a bottle filled half way with baking soda. It’ll be a burst of fun for you all. Want to get fancy? 3. Hungry? Play restaurant! Let each child take turns serving you. Of course this works best if the meal isn’t filet mignon and potatoes. Try pizza and juice boxes. Get creative with a chef’s hat and an apron.
  4. Go on a bear hunt! No, I’m not joking. There’s a rhyme that goes with it. You can play in the front or back yard but it’s also a lot of fun inside. Try it with your kiddos 10 and under. http://www.songsforteaching.com/tickletunetyphoon/goingonabearhunt.htm
  5. Munchkin Olympics is a fun way to use indoor props safely. Create a mini obstacle course and time how long it takes to complete it. Tumble over pillows, hop scotch, crab walk, army crawl under a table! All of these obstacles are safe and can be done in the home with a little planning.
